NFL EXHIBITION ROUNDUP : Chargers Hold Off 49ers for 29-28 Win
Billy Joe Tolliver and Mark Vlasic each threw touchdown passes as the San Diego Chargers held off the San Francisco 49ers, 29-28, Saturday night at San Diego.
San Diego (3-0) got what proved to be its decisive points with a second-quarter safety on a botched punt by the 49ers (1-2).
San Francisco quarterback Steve Young scored on a one-yard sneak with 35 seconds left. San Francisco starter Joe Montana completed 19 of 29 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns.
Miami 17, Denver 16--Marc Logan’s one-yard touchdown run with 1:54 left capped a 79-yard drive and the Dolphins broke a seven-game exhibition losing streak at Miami.
John Elway of Denver (2-2) completed 17 of 22 passes for 151 yards and a two-yard touchdown pass to Paul Green.
Dan Marino of Miami (1-2) was 10 of 20 for 117 yards.
New York Giants 17, New York Jets 7--Phil Simms completed all 11 of his second-quarter passes, including touchdowns to Mark Ingram and rookie Rodney Hampton as the Giants won at East Rutherford, N.J.
The Giants (3-0) have won eight of nine exhibitions with the Jets and lead the series, 13-8-1.
The Jets (2-1) lost their first under new Coach Bruce Coslet.
Dallas 20, Pittsburgh 9--Troy Aikman and Steve Walsh threw touchdown passes in the second half and the Cowboys defeated the Steelers at Irving, Tex.
Aikman hit Steve Folsom with a two-yarder and Walsh found Michael Irvin on a 28-yarder to give Dallas (1-2) a 20-6 lead.
Gary Anderson kicked field goals of 53, 52 and 35 yards for Pittsburgh (1-2).
Washington 31, Cleveland 13--Gerald Riggs ran 72 yards for a touchdown and Earnest Byner scored on a 12-yarder, both on the first play after Brown fumbles, and the Redskins won at Cleveland.
The Browns (1-3) dominated the first quarter but came away empty when Matt Bahr missed field goal tries of 37 and 40 yards.
Atlanta 17, Green Bay 14--Chris Miller passed to George Thomas for a 54-yard touchdown and Steve Broussard ran 71 yards for a score as the Falcons got past the Packers at Milwaukee.
The Falcons (3-0) are off to their best exhibition start in the franchise’s history under first-year Coach Jerry Glanville.
Mike Norseth of Green Bay (1-2) hit Clarence Weathers on a 60-yard touchdown pass play.
New Orleans 28, Buffalo 23--John Fourcade threw two touchdown passes and led a 65-yard drive capped by Rufus Mayes’ one-yard touchdown run, and the Saints won at New Orleans.
Buffalo (0-3) rallied on a 34-yard scoring pass play from Gale Gilbert to Al Edwards with 4:25 left and recovered an onside kick to set up a 31-yard field goal by Scott Norwood, but the Saints (3-1) turned back their final bid.
