COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Romo Rescues Mission, 4-3
Nino Romo came in to pitch the final out Friday in a Southern California Athletic Conference game and struck out Compton College’s Bob Cowens with the bases loaded to preserve Mission’s 4-3 win at Valley College.
Romo’s first save made a winner of Eddie Chavez (4-3), who pitched 8 2/3 innings.
Brad McGahan hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Tom Gibson with the winning run.
Compton is 0-19 overall, 0-8 in conference play.
In other baseball games:
Cypress 4, Canyons 1--Todd Blyleven, son of Angel pitcher Bert Blyleven, shut down Canyons in a championship semifinal game of the Hancock tournament. Blyleven, a freshman right-hander, struck out eight, walked three and scattered three hits in a complete game.
Cypress left fielder Eric Wilson saved Blyleven in the ninth when he reached over the fence to rob Jon Beauchemin of a two-run home run.
Scott Roth, Beauchemin and Pat DeBoer had singles for Canyons (11-11-1), which will play for third place this morning.
Chad Phillips (2-3) took the loss, and Bill Horvat scored Canyons’ only run. Cypress is 17-9.
Channel Coast tournament--Moorpark lost twice in the final day of pool play at Moorpark.
Against Rancho Santiago in the first game, Moorpark’s Del Marine had a three-run, bases-loaded double. However, Moorpark failed to score again in the seven-inning game and lost, 4-3.
In the second game, Moorpark (10-15) lost to Long Beach City, 8-4. Jesse Anguiano put Moorpark ahead, 2-0, with a two-run single in the top of the fourth. Tim Del Monte took the loss.
SOFTBALL
Moorpark 1, Ventura 0--Kathy Morales went seven innings, allowed seven hits and struck out five to lead Moorpark (17-5, 3-0) to a Western State Conference victory at Ventura College.
Morales went two for three. Gina Skinner drove in Tami Harp with a sacrifice fly in the sixth for the game’s only run.
