The Florida Marlins gave first-round draft pick Josh Booty a record signing bonus of $1.6 million.

Booty agreed not to play college football after being perhaps the nation’s top high school prospect last season. He had a scholarship offer to play quarterback at Louisiana State. He batted .429 with 12 homers as a senior at Evangel Christian High in Louisiana.

His signing bonus exceeds the previous record of $1.55 million for this year’s top draft pick, Paul Wilson, and the first pick in 1991, Brien Taylor. Wilson signed with the New York Mets, Taylor with the New York Yankees.

San Francisco Giant reliever Rod Beck was added to the NL All-Star team, replacing Cincinnati’s Jose Rijo, who has a sore elbow. Red shortstop Barry Larkin also won’t play because of a sore elbow; Wil Cordero of the Montreal Expos will replace him.
