Netherlands Keeps Its Hopes Alive
The Netherlands used to lose regularly to Japan, but no more.
The rapidly improving Dutch routed Japan, 15-3, 15-10, 15-3, to keep alive their chances of advancing to the playoffs in the tournament.
Both teams are 1-2 in Pool A.
The top four teams out of the two six-team pools advance.
The Netherlands used a powerful attack to negate Japan’s ball-handling and quickness.
Henriette Weersing had 24 kills for the Netherlands. Erna Brinkman added 15 and Cintha Boersma had 13.
The taller Dutch had 11 blocks for points compared to only one for Japan.
Tomoko Yoshihara was Japan’s top attacker with 14 kills.

Brazil remained unbeaten in Pool B and handed Russia its first loss, 15-3, 15-11, 15-13.
In other matches: South Korea defeated Ukraine, 15-3, 15-10, 15-7; Germany swept Canada, 15-5, 15-12, 15-6; and Cuba beat Peru, 15-2, 15-5, 15-10.
