Football: Crespi is a work in progress

After a 67-0 opening win over Woodland Hills Taft, then a 47-7 defeat to Salpointe (Ariz.), Encino Crespi must have its fans asking, “What’s going on?”

What’s happening is that first-year Coach Troy Thomas is still trying to get players to buy in. And that means being held accountable. There could be more highs and lows coming. Next up is a Friday night road game against Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. Still on the schedule is a game against Inland Empire power Vista Murrieta.

“There’s a lot of things we could have learned. We’ll see what we learned,” Thomas said of his team’s performance last week.

Thomas has never been about wins and losses. When the players start to figure that out, change will happen. Otherwise, the Celts of 2013 could be a roller-coaster team.

One player who is coming through is defensive back-receiver Marvell Tell. The junior is living up to the preseason hype. Now he needs to bring along some of his teammates.

“I believe in this team,” Thomas said.

But changing culture takes time.
