Pac-12 football: Arizona State upsets No. 15 Michigan State; Montez’s late TD pass gives Colorado win; Arizona falls to Houston

Brandon Ruiz hit a 28-yard field goal as time expired, Manny Wilkins threw for 380 yards and a touchdown, and Arizona State rallied to beat No. 15 Michigan State 16-13 on Saturday night.

Arizona State (2-0) got the Herm Edwards era off to a rousing start with a 49-7 rout of UTSA in its opener. Faced with a bigger challenge, the Sun Devils never flinched, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter to knock off the Spartans.

Wilkins hit N’Keal Harry on a tying 27-yard pass early in the fourth quarter, then orchestrated the last drive to set up Ruiz’s winning kick. The Sun Devils are 10-0 against Big Ten teams in Tempe.

Michigan State (1-1) had a hard time shaking Utah State to win its opener by seven. The Spartans had a similar problem with Arizona State after three drives inside the Sun Devils 10 resulted in two field goals and an interception.

Colorado 33, at Nebraska 28: Steven Montez connected with Laviska Shenault Jr. for a 40-yard touchdown with 1:06 to play and Colorado’s defense held at the end, allowing the Buffaloes to beat Nebraska 33-28 on Saturday and spoil Scott Frost’s debut as the Cornhuskers’ coach.

There was no lack of drama in the teams’ first meeting since 2010, the last season in the Big 12 for both.

Colorado got the ball for the last time with 2:23 left after Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez went out of the game because of an injury.

Montez moved the Buffaloes from their 23 to the Nebraska 41 before Ben Stille sacked him to set up a third-and-19 that became third and 24 after a false start. Montez overthrew Jay MacIntyre over the middle, but safety Aaron Williams was called for a personal foul for hitting the defenseless MacIntyre.

Given new life, Montez hit Shenault along the right sideline for the go-ahead score.

at No. 9 Washington 45, North Dakota 3: Jake Browning threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns, Ty Jones had two touchdown receptions , and No. 9 Washington finally pulled away in the second half for a 45-3 victory over North Dakota on Saturday.

The Huskies home opener was a chance to regroup after the letdown of last week’s season opener loss to No. 7 Auburn. It was a game Washington believed it should have won, and the hangover from the buildup surrounding the opener showed up against the Fighting Hawks (1-1) with a shaky performance on offense

at Oregon 62, Portland State 14: Justin Herbert threw for 250 yards and four touchdowns before heading to the bench in the third quarter, and No. 23 Oregon routed Portland State 62-14 on Saturday in Eugene, Ore.

It was the 22nd straight non-conference win for the Ducks (2-0). Herbert, who completed 20 of 26 passes against the Vikings, now has 10 total touchdowns — nine passing and one on the ground — in two games so far this season.

Portland State (0-2) has lost 15 consecutive games dating to 2016, including eight straight on the road. The FCS-level Vikings went 0-11 last season and have allowed 134 total points in their two games this year.

Portland State quarterback Jalani Eason threw for 111 yards and two touchdowns, but he was also sacked four times by Oregon’s defense. Charlie Taumoepeau caught five passes for 125 yards and both TDs for his second-straight game with more than 100 yards receiving.

at Houston 45, Arizona 18: D’Eriq King threw for four touchdowns and rushed for one as the Cougars opened a 21-0 lead and cruised to victory. King finished with 246 passing and 27 rushing yards while Houston improved to 2-0 on the season.

King connected with Marquez Stevenson on a 24-yard TD pass, scored on a 1-yard run, then hit tight end Romello Brooker for a 52-yard score and a 21-0 Houston lead after one quarter.

Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate tweaked his ankle in the first half but remained in the game. The elusive quarterback, who came into the season in the Heisman Trophy conversation, looked sluggish at times, but finished the game completing 24 of 45 passes for 341 yards and two interceptions.

Utah 17, at Northern Illinois 6: Zack Moss ran for a touchdown while Chase Hanson added another score on a late interception return as unranked Utah extended its nonconference winning streak to 21 with a 17-6 come-from-behind victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday night.

Tyler Huntley was 20-of-31 passing for 286 yards as the Utes (2-0) remained unbeaten in nonconference games since 2012 and improved to 28-1 since joining the Pac-12 Conference in 2011.

at Oregon State 48, Southern Utah 25: Freshman Jermar Jefferson rushed for 238 yards and four touchdowns — including a weaving 62-yard score — as Oregon State beat Southern Utah 48-25 on Saturday night.

In his second game, Jefferson notched the third-highest single-game rushing total for Oregon State.

Conor Blount started at quarterback and completed 15 of 22 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown for the Beavers (1-1).

California 21, at Brigham Young 18: Freshman Chase Garbers threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 45 yards rushing, to lead California to a 21-18 win over BYU. Sophomore quarterback Brandon McIlwain ran for 74 yards and a touchdown while also throwing for 38 yards on 5-of-7 passing for the Bears.

at Washington State 31, San Jose State: Gardner Minshew threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as Washington State beat San Jose State 31-0, in an emotional game that began with a brief tribute to deceased WSU quarterback Tyler Hilinski. Tay Martin caught a pair of touchdown passes for Washington State (2-0), a five-touchdown favorite in the game.
