Obama calls Spurs coach to congratulate him on championship

President Barack Obama called San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich on Friday to congratulate him on his team winning the 2014 NBA championship.

Obama told Popovich he was thoroughly impressed with the team in many aspects, including their record-setting scoring performance, according to a White House news release.

The Spurs outscored their playoff opponents by a combined 214 points, the largest plus/minus in league history, according to NBA.com.

The team dominated the Miami Heat in the Finals, winning in five games.

This marked the fifth championship in the team’s history, all within the past 15 years. The Spurs’ last title was in 2007.

Obama complimented Popovich by telling him he is one of the nation’s best coaches and a role model, according to the White House.

The team will visit the White House later this year to meet with Obama.
