UCLA offensive line still a question leading into Cal game

Unsurprisingly, Coach Jim Mora isn’t revealing who will be starting on UCLA’s offensive line against Cal on Saturday.

“I guess that’s one reason to tune in at 12:41 p.m. Pacific time, to see who is out there,” Mora said after practice Thursday.

Starting guard Alex Redmond injured his leg against Arizona State and hasn’t appeared in a game since. He’s been in and out of practice over the last three weeks, including missing a practice Wednesday because of the flu.

Redshirt freshman Kenny Lacy has been starting in place of Redmond, but in the Cal game his playing time might go to Conor McDermott, UCLA’s biggest offensive lineman. McDermott has been plagued by shoulder injuries for most of his UCLA career, but played in the fourth quarter against Oregon last week and could get more playing time this weekend.

The other wild card is tackle Simon Goines, who has yet to play in a game this season due to leg issues. His practice load has increased since the first week of the season and Mora said he had a “good week of practice,” but it would still be a surprise to see Goines on the field.
