Boys’ basketball: Chino Hills wins Maranatha tournament

The first week for three Ball brothers playing together at Chino Hills has gone off about as well as anyone could ask.

The Huskies won the Maranatha basketball tournament Gold Division championship on Saturday night, defeating Long Beach Poly, 69-56. Lonzo Ball was the division MVP.

Senior Lonzo Ball, junior LiAngelo Ball and freshman LaMelo Ball look to be an imposing trio throughout the summer. Next up will be the Fairfax tournament beginning Monday night when Chino Hills plays in a 7:30 p.m. opening game against Loyola.

Another team making a good summer impression was Compton, which finished in third place in the Gold Division with a 46-44 win over Fairfax.

Oak Park won the Silver Division championship with a 42-31 win over Viewpoint. Wes Slajchert was the division MVP.

Brentwood won the Bronze Division with a 63-59 win over Claremont. Braelee Albert was division MVP.

In a Saddleback Valley Christian tournament game, Crespi defeated Corona Centennial, 65-58. The Celts and Huskies also will be playing at Fairfax next week. De’Anthony Melton scored 23 points, Brandon Williams 14 and Taj Regans 11 for Crespi.

Bishop Montgomery won the Westchester tournament championship over the host Comets. Sophomore David Singleton led Bishop Montgomery. Windward defeated Taft in overtime in the consolation final.

The War on the Floor tournament will have its championship games on Sunday at St. Genevieve at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
