Police in Santa Ana are baffled by the killing of a homeless man, who investigators say appears to have been shot while he slept Sunday.

“We have no clue. No clue,” said police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. “We’re hoping someone in the public knows something.”

The man’s body was found with multiple gunshot wounds inside a sleeping bag at Heritage Park about 4:30 a.m., police said. A passerby found him and called police.

“We’re trying to look into his contacts and what went on in his life,” Bertagna said.

There were no signs of a struggle, and it was unclear if he had been robbed, police said. The body was found in a grassy, fenced-in area next to a drainage ditch leading to a canal. The area is not known for homeless encampments.

The man’s identity remains undetermined, although he appears to be about age 55 , police said.
