Gammons apologizes for comparing A-Rod to marathon bombers

New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has drawn plenty of ire in the baseball world as he continues to fight his 211-game suspension from Major League Baseball for allegedly using performance-enhancing drugs.

But MLB Network analyst Peter Gammons took the villainization of Rodriguez too far during a radio interview Thursday.

While speaking with ESPN Radio’s Mike Lupica, Gammons said people within the New York Yankees organization say Rodriguez “wants to blow up the world. You know, he’s like the marathon bombers. It’s just, he’s going to get them.”

It’s unclear whether someone in the Yankees organization made this comparison to Gammons or whether the longtime baseball analyst made the comparison himself. Regardless, he shouldn’t have said it.

Rodriguez might be making a vain attempt to rebuild his tattered baseball legacy, but he shouldn’t be compared to killers.

Gammons later apologized on Twitter for his remarks:

@dianagram @SI_ExtraMustard Stupidly worded comp of blowing up a process. He is owed, and gets my apology for mispeaking— Peter Gammons (@pgammo) November 21, 2013

@craigcalcaterra It was a stupid, poorly worded comp of blowing up a process. Alex would never hurt a human. I hope I haven’t hurt him— Peter Gammons (@pgammo) November 21, 2013
