Union files grievance for Francisco Rodriguez

Share

The Major League Baseball Players Assn. filed a grievance Wednesday against the New York Mets and the commissioner’s office challenging the team’s decision to place reliever Francisco Rodriguez on the disqualified list.

The move was made Tuesday, the same day Rodriguez had surgery for a thumb injury that was suffered last week during an altercation with his girlfriend’s father. The union said the grievance alleges material breaches of Rodriguez’s contract, including nonpayment of salary. No hearing date has been set.

The 28-year-old is due to make $11.5 million in 2011, the last year of his contract. However, he has an option for 2012 worth $17.5 million that is guaranteed if Rodriguez finishes 55 games in 2011, finishes 100 games between 2010-11, and if doctors declare him healthy after the 2011 season.

Braves acquire Lee

The Atlanta Braves acquired first baseman Derrek Lee from the Chicago Cubs for three pitching prospects. In 109 games this season, he has a .251 batting average, 16 home runs and 56 runs batted in.

The Cubs got right-handers Robinson Lopez and Tyrelle Harris and left-hander Jeffrey Lorick, along with cash considerations.

Etc.

Boston Red Sox outfielder Mike Cameron will have season-ending surgery for an abdominal problem, and outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury might also miss the rest of the year because of a cracked rib. … Braves infielder Troy Glaus went on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore left knee. … Detroit Tigers second baseman Carlos Guillen, who suffered a bruised left knee when he was taken out on a hard slide by the New York Yankees’ Brett Gardner on Monday, was put on the 15-day disabled list.
