The Boston Red Sox have put right-hander Joe Kelly on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, a day after he left his start because of a shoulder impingement.

Kelly faced four batters against Tampa Bay on Tuesday and left after the training staff visited the mound for the second time in the first inning.

Kelly underwent an MRI exam. Manager John Farrell said it’s too early to project how long he’d be out.

“Based on the MRI, it reveals the impingement,” Farrell said. “There’s no changes to the structure to the MRI that was taken last September, and now we’ve got to let it quiet down.”

Kelly was shut down in mid-September last season because of tightness in the shoulder and didn’t pitch the remainder of the year.

Athletics’ Eric Sogard has knee surgery

Oakland Athletics infielder Eric Sogard had surgery on his left knee.

Sogard, who started 87 games at second base last year, went on the disabled list because of a cervical strain at the end of spring training. He began an injury rehabilitation assignment early last week with Class-A Stockton and started two games but had not played since April 13.

Braves send Williams Perez to triple A

Right-hander Williams Perez was optioned by the Atlanta Braves to triple-A Gwinnett.

Atlanta will have to find another pitcher to fill Perez’s rotation spot Sunday against Jacob deGrom and the New York Mets.

Right-hander Aaron Blair pitched seven no-hit innings for Gwinnett on Tuesday night and is a candidate for that outing.
