Florida State dismissed freshman quarterback De’Andre Johnson from its football team Monday after the state attorney’s office said a video showed Johnson punching a woman at a Tallahassee bar last month.

Johnson, 19, turned himself in to the Leon County jail last week on a notice to appear for misdemeanor battery and was released on a $500 bond.

The Tallahassee Police Department has said Johnson punched a 21-year-old female FSU student June 24 while waiting to be served at Yianni’s nightclub. According to the police report, she suffered “bruising under her left eye, swelling to the left cheek and upper lip and a small cut on the bridge of her nose” after the incident.

Johnson left the scene, police said, but was named by witnesses and identified in a photograph by the female student.

The initial charge under investigation was of felony battery. It was downgraded after a detective’s probe, which included security video from inside the bar.

Johnson was suspended indefinitely from the football team the day after the incident. He was dismissed Monday.

Johnson enrolled at FSU in January and completed eight of 11 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns in the Seminoles’ spring game. He was not expected to receive much playing time in the fall behind quarterbacks Sean Maguire and Everett Golson.
