The Cleveland Indians did not make qualifying offers to free agents Mike Napoli and Rajai Davis, two key players in their run to the World Series.

Issuing the $17.2-million offers before Monday’s deadline would have guaranteed the team compensatory draft picks if the players sign elsewhere. The Indians said they have strong interest in re-signing Napoli, who led them with 101 RBIs, and Davis. But by not making the offers, they forfeit exclusive negotiating rights, and the players can talk with any team.

Etc.

Toronto sluggers Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion, and New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and second baseman Neil Walker were among 10 players to receive qualifying offers from their teams. Others included Chicago Cubs outfielder Dexter Fowler, major league home run leader Mark Trumbo of Baltimore, Texas outfielder Ian Desmond and Philadelphia pitcher Jeremy Hellickson. The deadline for players to accept is Nov. 14.

Pitcher James Shields will keep his contract with the Chicago White Sox rather than become a free agent after tying for the major league lead in losses. Shields, 6-19 with a 5.85 ERA in 2016, is due $21 million in each of the next two seasons.

San Francisco named Phil Nevin third base coach and Jose Alguacil first base coach. Both managed in triple A this year. They replace Bill Hayes and Roberto Kelly, who were not retained.
