Ducks acquisition Tim Jackman brings toughness

The Ducks unveiled their new addition Tim Jackman at Friday’s morning skate, putting the right wing on the same line with rugged center Daniel Winnik and aggressive Matt Beleskey.

“All big, all can skate,” Winnik said before Friday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning (14-8) at Honda Center. “Hopefully, our strong suit is going to be get on the forecheck, lay the body and control the puck.”

Jackman is “definitely going to add a spark to the lineup,” Winnik said. “The way he plays will probably give some guys more room on the ice, which is definitely needed now.”

A 6-foot-2, 225-pound veteran of 400-plus NHL games, Jackman had 41 penalty minutes in 10 games with the Calgary Flames, who traded him Thursday for a 2014 sixth-round draft pick.

Jackman, 32, most recently visited Honda Center on Oct. 16, when he was ejected for a game misconduct; he hammered the butt end of his stick at Ducks defenseman Sami Vatanen.

The episode was referenced in Jackman’s “quick chat” Friday morning with Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau.

“He told me he wants [me] to play hard and play physical, but be smart,” Jackman said. “Be a good hockey player. Last time I played here . . . my emotions got the best of me. . . . You’ve got to learn from your mistakes.”

Jackman said he admires Beleskey’s like-minded toughness.

“I’ve played against him, know he brings a lot of energy and has skill as well,” Jackman said. “We’ll do some things on the offensive zone. Protect the puck, get in there and forecheck. I can feel the confidence when we handle the puck.”

Said Beleskey: “They want a physical game, he adds a bigger dynamic, another physical aspect, a big guy who brings toughness and that intimidation factor. It’s good for our team, and can help try to wear some teams out.”

Jackman arrives with the first-place Ducks (15-6-3) winless in their last five games. Boudreau said he doesn’t believe his team is getting pushed around, despite perhaps experiencing fatigue from playing 12 of their last 16 games on the road.

“We’ve gotten by, but as the season goes on it gets grittier and grittier,” Boudreau said. “You can never have enough of those character guys who are going to win battles for you in the corner at the right time.

“This is definitely a deal for the [near] future. Look at the teams in our division and conference: they’re big, strong, physical teams.”

Beauchemin update: Boudreau said injured defenseman Francois Beauchemin, whose head slammed into the boards during Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime loss to New Jersey, remains day-to-day.

The veteran didn’t practice Friday and Vatanen was recalled to play for him. Boudreau said it was undetermined as of Friday morning whether Beauchemin would travel to Phoenix and Dallas with the Ducks.

Fasth likely to start: Viktor Fasth was the first goalie off the ice at Friday’s morning skate, indicating he’ll start against Tampa Bay. Jonas Hiller let five goals past him in 20 shots in the Ducks’ 5-1 loss Nov. 14 against the Lightning.

Tampa Bay has been outscored, 16-6, in three consecutive losses since -- including a 5-1 defeat Thursday in San Jose -- as the loss of leading scorer Steven Stamkos takes hold.
