USC will play Fresno State in the Las Vegas Bowl, the Pac-12 Conference announced Sunday.

The Trojans, 9-4 overall, will play the 11-1 Bulldogs on Dec. 21 at Sam Boyd Stadium. Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m.

USC also is scheduled to play Fresno State in its 2014 season opener at the Coliseum.

Fresno State, under Coach Tim DeRuyter, accepted its bid Saturday night after defeating Utah State, 24-17, in the Mountain West Conference championship game.

New USC Coach Steve Sarkisian will not coach the Trojans in the bowl game. Offensive coordinator Clay Helton will serve as coach.

USC is 1-1 against Fresno State.

The Trojans lost to the Bulldogs, 24-7, in the 1992 Freedom Bowl.

In 2005, USC outlasted Fresno State for a 50-42 victory at the Coliseum.

This will be the Trojans’ second appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl. Utah defeated USC, 10-6, in the 2001.
