Olajuwon Fined $5,000 for Throwing Punch
Akeem Olajuwon, Houston Rockets All-Star center, was fined $5,000 by the National Basketball Assn. Monday for punching Michael Cage of Seattle in the SuperSonics’ 118-108 victory over Houston last Friday night.
Rod Thorn, NBA vice president of operations announced the fine, but a Rocket spokesman said the league had not notified the team, which would not comment.
The incident occurred after Cage put a hammerlock on Olajuwon, trying to stop an easy basket off an offensive rebound. Olajuwon responded by using a quick left jab to Cage’s mouth. The gash took four stitches to close.
