College Roundup : CSUN Moves Into 2nd in Golf Finals

Led by senior Scott Humphries and freshman Roger Metz, Cal State Northridge shot a four-man total of 296 to move into second place after the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division II golf championships at Lake View Country Club in Erie, Pa.

Humphries and Metz both shot even-par 72, two shots behind individual leader Gordon Vietmeier of Slippery Rock State. Northridge’s Tim Hogarth had 75 and freshman Roger Makemson shot 77 to put the Matadors nine shots behind team leader Columbus (Ga.) College, which had a one-under 287. Top-ranked Jacksonville Southern shot 300.

To offset Tuesday’s rain-out, 36 holes will be played today.

MEN’S TENNIS

Cal Lutheran was eliminated from the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics men’s tennis finals Wednesday in Kansas City, Mo.

The Kingsmen finished in a three-way tie for seventh with 13 points.

Cal Lutheran Coach John Siemens, named District 3 Coach of the Year, said that there is a good chance his team will remain in the top 14 in the national rankings--giving the school its best finish. Last season, the Kingsmen placed 17th.

CLU’s Tony Cohen advanced to a fourth-round singles match Wednesday before losing.
