ON THE SIDELINES : Jones Keeps Lead in Bridgestone

SODEGAURA, Japan —
First-round leader Brian Jones of Australia shot a 1-under-par 71 today and stayed on top by one stroke in the Bridgestone Golf tournament.
Jones, who started the day two strokes in front, shot four birdies against three bogeys on the 7,120-yard, par-72 Sodegaura Country Club course.
Jones clinged to a slim lead at 135, one shot ahead of countryman Roger Mackay, who shot a 70. Mackay was tied at 136 with Tadao Nakamura, who carded a 68.
A total of 62 players made the 145 cut and advanced to the final rounds. First prize is worth $127,000.
