From Associated Press

In the year of highly ranked teams and coaches running up the score, here’s a new one: Penn State running up the score.

Coach Joe Paterno caught an earful from Rutgers Coach Doug Graber shortly after No. 6 Penn State (3-0) won its 20th in a row with a wild 59-34 shootout over Rutgers (1-2) at Giants Stadium.

As the coaches met at the center of the field, Graber unleashed an expletive-filled tirade at the long-time Penn State coach because of a 42-yard touchdown pass by Nittany Lions backup quarterback Mike McQueary with 58 seconds to play.

“I don’t want to get into it,” Graber said after the game. “I’d rather just say the game is over and I would rather go on my way.”

Paterno, who has criticized other coaches for running the score up to maintain a high national ranking, said his quarterback just took advantage of an opening.

“We were going to give him one throw in the ballgame,” Paterno said. “He was supposed to hit the tight end coming across and the flanker [Chris Campbell] popped open and he threw it to him. I think Doug was upset about that and he has a right to be.”
