Amritraj Loses Out in U.S. Doubles Final

Third-seeded Rajeev Ram of Carmel, Ind., and Jonathan Stokke of Chapel Hill, N.C., defeated fourth-seeded Prakash Amritraj of Encino and K.C. Corkery of Manhattan Beach, 6-7 (14-12), 7-5, 6-2, to win the doubles title of the boys’ 16 U.S. National Clay Court Championships on Saturday at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

Sixth-seeded Jeff Kazarian of Rolling Hills and Rylan Rizza of Rancho Palos Verdes beat Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas and Sam Warburg of Sacramento in the third-place match, 6-1, 7-5.

Bobby Reynolds of Aoworth, Ga., and Jeremy Wurtzman of Rochester, N.Y., downed Travis Rettenmaier of Camarillo and Robby Ginepri of Marietta, Ga., 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals of the boys’ 18s at Louisville Country Club in Louisville, Ky.

Rettenmaier and Ginepri will play Ryan Haviland of Sumter, S.C., and Trevor Smith of Hilton Head Island, S.C., for third place today.

GOLF

Jeff Sanday of South Pasadena shot six-under par 66 on Saturday to take a one-shot lead heading into the final round today of the $140,000 Long Beach Open at El Dorado Park Golf Course.

Sanday, who played at Cal State Northridge, stands at 66-66-66--198.

Jeff Freeman of Palm Desert, who in recent weeks has won the PGA of America Club Pro Championship and the Southern California PGA Match Play Championship, is second at 64-68-67--199.

Joe Acosta Jr. of Visalia is third at 64-69-68--201.

VOLLEYBALL

Jennifer Eastlake and Gina Morgan of Santa Paula won the girls’ 18-and-under state grass doubles championship in a California Beach Volleyball Assn.tournament Saturday at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura.

The Santa Paula High students beat Janee Richards and Kami Teal of Buena High, 15-10, in the title game.

Eastlake and Morgan defeated Mandy Jetton of Ventura and Amber Gill of Santa Paula, 15-5, in the semifinals.

Justin Galvez and Corey Crawford of Newbury Park won the boys’ 18-and-under grass doubles title by defeating Tyler Quiel and Jeremy Root of Santa Barbara, 15-9, in that final match.

MISCELLANY

* A two-person scramble tournament to benefit the Verdugo Hills High football program will be held Aug. 7 at De Bell Golf Course in Burbank.

Cost is $105 and includes range balls, green fees, a cart and barbecue lunch. Registration will be taken through Monday.

SUMMER CAMPS

* The Super Eagles softball camp for girls 7-14 will be conducted Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Chaminade Middle School in Chatsworth.

The camp, directed by Steve Harrington, coach at Chaminade High, will feature instruction from Beckey Newbry, former University of Washington player, and members of Chaminade’s Southern Section Division IV championship team, including Stanford-bound pitcher Maureen LeCocq.
