Jon Jones to defend UFC title against Glover Teixeira
Following his most difficult fight yet, Ultimate Fighting Championship light-heavyweight
champion Jon Jones will return to defend his belt March 15 in Dallas against
Glover Teixeira.
It will be the seventh title defense for the 26-year-old Jones (19-1).
Brazilian Teixeira, 34, has won all five of his UFC fights, including a January unanimous decision
over former light-heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and four other
submissions or knockouts.
Teixeira most recently knocked out wrestler Ryan Bader in the first round in September.
Jones delivered his defining performance to date Sept. 21 in Toronto, earning a
unanimous decision over Sweden’s Alexander Gustafsson in Toronto.
New York’s Jones was cut over the right eye in the fight and had to urge a ringside doctor
not to stop the fight before rallying to edge Gustafsson.
Jones nevertheless left the octagon with a foot injury and asked out of fighting
Teixeira on Super Bowl weekend in New Jersey to allow more recovery time.
Amid calls for a quick rematch with Gustafsson, Jones declined, saying he’s confident a
rematch will come and he didn’t want to deviate from his original plan to fight Teixeira (22-2) next.
