Clippers’ Alvin Gentry drawing interest from other NBA teams

Clippers associate head coach Alvin Gentry has started to draw interest from other NBA teams to fill one of their head-coaching openings or to perform in the capacity he has in Los Angeles, as the offensive guru.

Although Gentry hasn’t yet interviewed for any job, Utah Jazz General Manager Dennis Lindsey has spoken to him about his team’s coaching opening after Tyrone Corbin was fired, according to NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Gentry is expected to interview for the Jazz job this week, one executive said.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, who got the first overall pick in the NBA draft in Tuesday’s lottery, have contacted Gentry about replacing Mike Brown, who was fired.

Gentry worked with Cleveland’s general manager, David Griffin, when they were with the Phoenix Suns.

Golden State’s new coach, Steve Kerr, has had several conversations over the past few weeks with Gentry about a post as Warriors associate head coach in charge of the offense.

Kerr and Gentry also worked together in Phoenix.

Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive asked Clippers Coach and Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations Doc Rivers for permission to speak with Gentry.

Ranadive wanted to gauge Gentry’s interest in running the offense for Kings Coach Mike Malone.

Perhaps the most interesting coaching scenario for Gentry is with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Memphis Coach Dave Joerger was given permission by the Grizzlies to interview for the head coach opening with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

If Joerger gets the job in Minnesota, Gentry, who interviewed for the job in Memphis last summer, will become one of the Grizzlies’ top candidates.

Gentry has been given credit for making the Clippers the top-scoring team in the NBA during the regular season, when it averaged 107.9 points per game.

According to both NBA executives, Rivers has told Gentry he’ll support whatever decision he makes.
