Conor McGregor-Nate Diaz rematch will happen at UFC 202 on August 20

Conor McGregor will return from his Ultimate Fighting Championship banishment on August 20 in a welterweight rematch against Nate Diaz in the headline event of UFC 202 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the organization announced Saturday.

McGregor, the charismatic Irishman and UFC’s featherweight (145-pound weight limit) champion, will again fight Stockton’s Diaz at the 170-pound welterweight limit.

That didn’t go so well for McGregor in March at UFC 196, when his bid to win the lightweight (155-pound) belt against Huntington Beach-trained Rafael Dos Anjos was scrapped by Dos Anjos’ foot injury and Diaz agreed to be a replacement less than two weeks before the fight date, with the weight set at 170.

Diaz overpowered a fatigued McGregor in the second round, rocking him with punches before submitting him by chokehold.

The pair were going to fight at UFC 200 on July 9, but McGregor refused to participate in promotional events in advance of the event so he could focus on training. UFC President Dana White pulled McGregor off the card, making the Daniel Cormier-Jon Jones light-heavyweight title rematch the main event.

Though McGregor spoke of a possible boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. during his time in limbo, the UFC had him under contract.

The UFC also announced Saturday that former heavyweight champion and active WWE star Brock Lesnar will fight on the UFC 200 card, although his opponent was not named.
