Clippers, Celtics talk Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett, but no deal yet

The saga between the Clippers and the Boston Celtics continued, with the two teams resuming negotiations Wednesday on a deal that was supposedly dead one day, came back to life another day but was unable to be completed by the end of the day.

The Clippers and Celtics had broken off talks Tuesday but started conversations again on a deal that centered on Coach Doc Rivers and All-Star forward Kevin Garnett coming to L.A., said league officials who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Whatever transpired between Gary Sacks, the Clippers’ vice president of basketball operations, and Danny Ainge, Boston’s president of basketball operations, on Wednesday didn’t move the needle enough to get a deal done.

Both sides ended the day saying talks would resume Thursday morning, the officials said. Hopes were of getting a deal done that would send center DeAndre Jordan and at least one No. 1 draft pick to Boston for the rights to Rivers and Garnett, who would waive his no-trade clause.

Meanwhile, the Clippers continued ahead in their search for a coach to replace Vinny Del Negro.

They had Indiana associate head coach Brian Shaw in Wednesday for his second interview with the Clippers’ front office, the officials said.

It wasn’t long after Shaw left the Clippers’ facility that the Clippers and Celtics began talking again, according to the executives.

Still, Shaw was scheduled to have dinner with owner Donald Sterling and some of the front-office personnel later Wednesday night.

Byron Scott, the former Cleveland Cavaliers, New Orleans Hornets and New Jersey Nets coach, had dinner with Sterling on Tuesday night to talk about becoming the new coach of the Clippers. Scott also met with the Clippers’ front office last week.

The deal between the Clippers and the Celtics had broken down several times because the Celtics had requested Jordan and two No. 1 draft picks and the Clippers refused.

Boston and the Clippers had agreed that Eric Bledsoe wouldn’t be a part of the deal.

The Clippers also had agreed to pay Jordan’s trade kicker of $3.5 million, the executives said.

The Clippers are prepared to pay Rivers $6 million to $7 million per year over five seasons, the officials said. Rivers has three years left on his contract in Boston, for which he would be paid $21 million.

The Clippers have talked to Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, the team’s two All-Stars, to keep them in the loop about the potential deal, the executives said.

Reports from Boston on Wednesday said that Rivers and Ainge had met to talk about Rivers’ situation with the team.

Garnett, 37, has two years left on his contract for $24.4 million.

Garnett, who has a home in Malibu, has said he wants to play only for Rivers.

Talks were called off Monday because neither team could agree upon a compensation package.
