Akire Hawkins has a mastery of music, and is very versatile when it comes to instruments. Just ask her fellow marching band members at Eisenhower High School in Blue Island, where Hawkins is a senior. Hawkins has made a name for herself in band. She is skilled at playing the xylophone, mallet percussion, crash cymbals and the bass drum. In a marching band, Hawkins is the kind of talent a director wants to keep around. Last year, Eisenhower's marching band won Best in Class at three competitions, and Hawkins was instrumental in that success. Hawkins, 17, started playing the flute in fifth grade.
