Jets’ Darrelle Revis cleared for contact, could play Sunday
Darrelle Revis was cleared for contact in practice Thursday for the first time since suffering a concussion in the season opener.
That could be great news for the New York Jets, who could have used the star cornerback’s services during a 27-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday. Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed passes to 10 different receivers and finished with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Revis’ possible return is not such great news for Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who appeared to be making progress after a rough outing to start his NFL career. He had no touchdowns and three interceptions with a passer rating of 39.0 in a season-opening loss to Houston but bounced back with one touchdown and no interceptions for a rating of 91.0 the following week in a win over Oakland.
But now the young quarterback might have to avoid throwing to the area of the field known as “Revis Island” when he makes his third NFL start in Miami on Sunday. There’s no guarantee the four-time Pro Bowler will be back in the secondary for the Jets, but Coach Rex Ryan was cautiously optimistic when talking to reporters before Thursday’s practice.
“If it’s not the final hurdle, I don’t want to be saying something that isn’t true,” Ryan said. “Hopefully he’ll play, but I guess we’ll see.”
Revis, who needed to be cleared by the team physician and an independent neurologist to take part in contact drills, passed all the required tests. He will be re-evaluated after practicing Thursday and Friday.
