Angels give away another game in 3-2 loss to Yankees

KEY MOMENT: The Angels were in position to hand Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka his first loss since Aug. 19, 2012, and end his 31-game win streak dating back to Japan. But Garrett Richards' two-seam fastball to Mark Teixeira didn't sink, and a pitch the right-hander called the "one mistake I made" was crushed for a solo homer into the second deck in right field, tying the score, 2-2, in the seventh inning.

AT THE PLATE: The Angels scored in the fourth on Erick Aybar's double, Ian Stewart's hit by pitch, Chris Iannetta's walk and J.B. Shuck's run-scoring fielder's choice. David Freese, mired in a two-for-22 (.091) slump, led off the sixth with a homer to give the Angels a 2-1 lead, but they were hitless in eight at-bats with runners in scoring position.

BOX SCORE: N.Y. Yankees 3, Angels 2

ON THE MOUND: Richards was superb, locating his 96-mph fastball and mixing in a sharp slider to hold the Yankees to two runs and three hits in seven innings, striking out seven and walking one. The homer to Teixeira came on a 2-and-2 pitch, giving the Angels a league-leading nine homers given up on two-strike pitches. Tanaka used a nasty split-fingered fastball to give up two runs and five hits, strike out 11 and walk four in 61/3 innings.

ROSTER MOVE: One of the organization's top relief prospects, right-hander Mike Morin, 22, was promoted from triple-A Sunday, and outfielder Brennan Boesch was sent to Salt Lake. Morin gave up four earned runs in eight innings of nine games at double-A Arkansas and Salt Lake. The key to his rapid rise has been an improved changeup. To clear a 40-man roster spot for Morin, the Angels designated double-A left-hander Michael Roth for assignment.

EXTRA BASES: Raul Ibanez did not start, because he was sick, but he pinch-hit in the ninth, striking out to end the game. … Infielder Grant Green, who is hitting .369 with 22 RBIs in 21 games at Salt Lake, has begun playing left field in hopes of increasing his versatility.

UP NEXT: Left-hander Tyler Skaggs (2-0, 3.21 ERA) will oppose Indians right-hander Justin Masterson (0-0, 4.50 ERA) at Angel Stadium on Monday at 7 p.m. On the air: FS West; Radio: 830.
