The 18th and last team to make the Southern Section Division 1 football playoff grouping was West Hills Chaminade. In fact, the Eagles are more than ready to take on the big boys.

With 15 returning starters and several top transfer students, Chaminde could be the most dangerous team for the big three come November _ Centennial, St. John Bosco and Mater Dei.

The top returnee is junior running back T.J. Pledger, who holds offers from USC and UCLA. There’s another top junior running back in Andrew Van Buren, plus top junior receiver Michael Wilson, top junior defensive lineman Mykee Irving and top junior offensive lineman Dylan Kellogg.

Of course, add Alemany transfer Brevin White at quarterback, only a junior, and you have a team that’s young, talented and expected to make steady improvement as the season progresses.

Perhaps the best opening game of 2016 matches Chaminade against Oaks Christian, another young but talented team. Each will be a top 10 team for 2017.
