Francesca Fedorovsky, a sophomore at San Clemente High, was named the recipient of the first $2,500 scholarship awarded by the Nick Pasquale Foundation.

Besides being a student with a 4.125 grade-point average, Fedorovsky is a nationally ranked fencer, with aspirations to compete in the Olympics. Two more scholarships will be awarded in May.

Fedorovsky is ranked No. 14 in the nation in the cadet sabre classification.

Pasquale, who played at San Clemente, was a walk-on receiver at UCLA. He was struck and killed by a car in September 2013. His parents established the Nick Pasquale Foundation to aid student-athletes.
