Rigas, Son Allowed to Remain Free on Appeal
John Rigas, the 80-year-old founder of Adelphia Communications Corp., who had been ordered to report to prison in September to begin serving a 15-year term, may remain free until his appeal is decided, a judge ruled.
U.S. District Judge Leonard Sand in New York also said Rigas’ son Timothy Rigas, the company’s former finance chief, may stay out of prison until the appeal is complete. Timothy Rigas was sentenced to 20 years in prison for looting the company and lying about its finances.
John and Timothy Rigas were convicted last July of conspiracy, bank fraud and securities fraud.
