Larchmont Boulevard blends old and new

Just south of Hollywood's soundstages and editing houses sits L.A.'s answer to Main Street, U.S.A: Larchmont Boulevard, which is peppered with stylish boutiques and inviting restaurants that cater to hip moms, foodies and families. The mix of new and old is refreshing -- yes, there's a Pinkberry, but Larchmont Barber Shop and Larchmont Hardware have been on the street since the 1920s and '30s, respectively -- and it draws regular crowds, who find the very strollable street a refreshing destination for one-stop shopping.

In Silver Lake and Echo Park, gift-giving is all grown up

Don't be fooled by the ripped jeans and chipped black nail polish on the clientele of Sunset Junction's coffee-nerd hub Intelligentsia -- Silver Lake and its hipper, dicier sister to the east, Echo Park, aren't just for the kids anymore. Grown-up eateries such as Restaurant 15 and Lot 1 have sprung up east of Alvarado in the last year, and the shopping has steadily grown more upscale.

Holiday shopping takes a French twist in South Pasadena

"Merci beaucoup," said the waiter at Mike & Anne's, a pleasant restaurant on Mission Street in South Pasadena, as my friend Allie and I finished our lattes and paid the bill. Allie had mentioned that there was a distinctive French theme to the shops and eateries in her neighborhood, but this seemed over-the-top. It was 11 a.m., already too late to get a pan au chocolat at the prepared-food shop and cafe Nicole's Gourmet Foods nearby (they usually sell out by 10), but it was the perfect time to start shopping for gifts. We started at Camille DePedrini, a special-occasion store with pricey but elegant accessories. Allie liked the black-lace gloves ($25) and an oversized, geometric print change purse, and I loved the jewel-colored clutches by Hoss, which had a playful elegance.

In Pacific Palisades, think indie, think Swarthmore

In Pacific Palisades, think indie, think Swarthmore

This season, many Pacific Palisades merchants are displaying window signs with the acronym SHOPP and the words "Shop Pacific Palisades." We couldn't agree more. If Santa double-parked Donder and company here for even half an hour, he could make a serious dent in his to-do list but not his wallet.
