To hear it from TV critics, HBO's series about the crooks, cops, reporters, politicians, teachers and poor working schlubs of Baltimore was the source of all that was good and right in American dramatic television. It was the show against which all others must be judged. To hear it from the TV Academy, um, what's "The Wire" again? Over the course of its five seasons on the air, it received a grand total of two nominations, both for writing. It lost both times.
