Four people hospitalized after hundreds of bees attack in Pasadena

A 92-year-old Pasadena woman and three neighbors were hospitalized Thursday night after they were attacked by hundreds of bees, officials said.

The woman was watering her yard about 7 p.m. in the 300 block of Anita Street and likely sprayed a beehive under her porch, prompting the attack, Pasadena police Sgt. Paul Carpenter said.

The woman, who was not identified, screamed as the bees attacked her and her dog, grabbing the attention of three neighbors who quickly ran to her aid. But they too came under attack.

“He went to help, but he got chased by the bees and stung in the process, so he just ran back,” Jennifer Go told KTLA of her cousin’s effort to help the woman.

Police who arrived at the home also had to take cover behind an ambulance, Carpenter said.

The woman was stung at least 20 times, but it is unclear how many bee stings her neighbors suffered.

They were all taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The woman’s dog, meanwhile, was taken to the Pasadena Humane Society for medical attention.

The swarm eventually dispersed after crews sprayed the bees and night fell, Carpenter said.

The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District planned to visit the woman’s home Friday to determine what to do with the beehive.
