Sacramento math teacher allegedly mows down three cyclists

A high school math teacher in Sacramento has been arrested on suspicion of mowing down three cyclists during an alleged road-rage incident, police said.

Wesley Tran, 31, was stopped about 11:02 p.m. Saturday after an officer spotted him driving the wrong way on 21^st Street at a high rate of speed, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Prior to being pulled over, Tran had allegedly argued with a cyclist who had punctured his car tire, police said.

Tran changed his tire and then went looking for the cyclist, who police said he eventually found and intentionally mowed down with his car. The cyclist suffered a head injury, police said.

After striking the cyclist and attempting to flee, he lost control of his car and hit two other cyclists on 21^st and L Street, injuring one, according to the Police Department.

Tran, who KTXL-TV reported teaches algebra at Yolo Education Center in West Sacramento, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Calls to the Washington Unified School District were not immediately returned.

Tran told KTXL he did not intentionally mow down the cyclists.
