Jesse Ryan Loskarn, a former top Senate staffer who had been charged with possessing child pornography, committed suicide by hanging, according to the Maryland medical examiner’s office.

“The cause of death is hanging,” spokesman Bruce Goldfarb told the Los Angeles Times on Friday. “It was determined to be a suicide.”

Loskarn, 35, was the former chief of staff to Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander.

“For everyone involved, this is a sad and tragic story from beginning to end,” stated Alexander. The senator had fired Loskarn after a raid on the aide’s Washington home.

After he was charged, Loskarn was released to the custody of his parents in Sykesville, Md., where he was ordered not to use the Internet and to wear an ankle bracelet.

Loskarn was found dead on Thursday in his parents’ home.

“Family members reported finding 35-year-old Jesse Ryan Loskarn unresponsive in his basement where he’d been residing with family since this past December,” said the Carroll County Sheriff’s office. “The preliminary investigation indicates that Loskarn may have taken his own life ... the investigation continues.”

Loskarn was arrested last month by federal agents on charges that he possessed and intended to distribute child pornography.

Federal prosecutors had delayed an indictment of Loskarn, hinting at a possible plea agreement. The next deadline in the case was Feb. 10, when the grand jury was expected to report.
