Squatters camp is targeted in protest
About 150 members of the Minuteman Project protested near a squatter community in a rural canyon Saturday, saying the Latino day laborers living in tents were illegal immigrants who should be deported.
The protesters, carrying signs that said “hiring illegal immigrants is a crime,” were met by about 20 counter-protesters.
Police on horseback were on hand to keep all the demonstrators off the land occupied by the squatters, which is private.
It wasn’t clear if any of the squatters were still there. Most had moved out over the last few days as word of the planned protest spread, police said.
Developer D.R. Horton, owner of part of the land, between Carmel Valley and Rancho Penasquitos, had told the men to vacate the property or be arrested for trespassing, said San Diego Police Capt. Boyd Long.
