Editorial Page Deputy Added to Masthead

Jeffrey M. Johnson, publisher of the Los Angeles Times, today announced that Michael Newman, deputy editorial page editor, is being promoted to the newspaper’s masthead. The move reflects Newman’s leadership in overseeing the newspaper’s opinion pages.

“Michael is a gifted, versatile editor who can lead the editorial board’s deliberations on a nuanced policy issue one moment, then dash off a witty headline the next,” said Andres Martinez, editor of the editorial page.

Newman, 40, joined the Los Angeles Times last May. He previously was a staff editor on the New York Times’ Op-Ed page, a senior writer at Business 2.0, a columnist and reporter at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and a reporter-researcher at the New Republic.

He is a graduate of Stanford University, where he edited the Stanford Daily in 1987. He also has been a Henry Luce Scholar in South Korea and a Knight Fellow at Yale Law School. A native of Boston, Newman and his wife, Nora Krug, live in Los Feliz.
