Officials and mining executives in central China have been accused of concealing the severity of a Feb. 2 explosion that killed 24 coal miners, not seven as initially reported, Chinese newspapers reported today.

Police have arrested five people, including the owner and manager of the Xingan coal mine in Henan province. The newspapers said Xingan reported that seven miners died in the blast and that mine owner Fu Faming ordered miners back into the shaft to seal it with earth to bury evidence of the deaths.
