Police shooting ruled not lawful

The death of a Brazilian who was mistakenly suspected by police of being a terrorist and shot on a London subway train was not a “lawful killing,” an inquest jury decided.

Directed by the coroner to decide between lawful killing or an open verdict, the jury chose the latter. The decision was a blow to Scotland Yard police and a boon to the family of Jean Charles de Menezes, who want those involved in his July 2005 death to face criminal charges.
