Drugs Found on Ship Before President’s Visit

Colombian authorities announced an embarrassing discovery as Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo arrived to discuss anti-drug strategies: a large stash of cocaine and heroin on a naval warship he is to visit.

Adm. Mauricio Soto, commander of Colombia’s navy, said 37 pounds of cocaine and 22 pounds of heroin were found in the engine room of the Gloria -- Colombia’s flagship naval vessel.

Colombian ship -- In an April 17 article in Section A about confiscated drugs, the Colombian ship Gloria was described as a warship. In fact, the Gloria is a three-mast sailing vessel that serves as the flagship of Colombia’s navy.

Toledo will meet military commanders on the ship today to discuss the fight against drug trafficking. Soto said three sailors have been detained.
