Times Wire Reports

Police detained a rancher suspected in the slaying of U.S. activist and nun Dorothy Stang, accusing him of illegally acquiring titles to land she died trying to defend.

Regivaldo Galvao’s arrest could lead to the reopening of the case in the death of Stang, 73, who was shot in 2005 in a dispute with ranchers.

Prosecutors contend Galvao and another rancher hired men to kill Stang. Galvao was arrested in 2005, but he was freed on bail and has used appeals to avoid trial. He has denied any role in Stang’s death.
