Waggoner Carr, 85; Ate Breakfast With JFK on Nov. 22, 1963
Waggoner Carr, 85, a former Texas attorney general and state representative who ate breakfast with President Kennedy the day Kennedy was assassinated, died of cancer Wednesday in Austin, according to his family.
Ernestine Carr said she and her husband had breakfast with Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. Waggoner Carr learned of the assassination when he arrived in the Panhandle for a speaking engagement later that day. He later testified before the Warren Commission, which investigated the assassination.
A native of Fairlie, Texas, Carr earned his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech and his law degree at the University of Texas. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces as a pilot. He served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1951 to 1961. From 1963 to ‘67, he served as the state’s attorney general. He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1966 and for governor in 1968 before returning to private practice.
