The FAA required some planes to be less noisy.

Designated older aircraft in the United States will be required to use less noisy engines or face fines of $1,000 a day, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The new rules, which will affect both domestic and foreign airlines, became official today, although enforcement will not begin until Saturday. The rules have been designed to control noise of older Boeing 707s, DC-8s and BAC-111s. Only several hundred of these aircraft are around, and many of them have already been modified by so-called hush kits or had quieter engines installed, the FAA said.
