William J. Schroeder, his artificial heart beating faster to keep pace with more strenuous exercise, was joined by his wife and children as they prepared to toast a new year he hadn’t expected to see. And Margaret Schroeder recorded a message of thanks to those who have rooted for her husband’s recovery from the mechanical heart implant and subsequent stokes. The 52-year-old Jasper, Ind., man remained in serious but stable condition at Humana Hospital Audubon in Louisville, Ky.
