Brazil Chief in Hospital

BRASILIA, Brazil —
President Joao Baptista Figueiredo was admitted to a hospital in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday night because of persistent back pain and may require surgery, a presidential spokesman said Thursday. Figueiredo, 66, has needed physiotherapy since he suffered a slipped disc in a riding accident in August.
