Oregon State Coach Ralph Miller has always advocated quickness and speed, and Saturday his Beavers made that philosophy pay off as they upset the Washington Huskies, 52-45, at Seattle.

“We have a quickness advantage,” Miller said, after using only five players, including three guards, in the Pacific 10 game. “Washington is not that quick as far as foot speed is concerned.

“The name of the game is speed and quickness, as far as I’m concerned. Something had to give--either their big front line or our speed and quickness.”

The Beavers improved their season record to 10-1 and their league mark to 2-0, while Washington slipped to 9-3 and 1-1. The loss also ended Washington’s 18-game home court winning streak.

A.C. Green led the Beavers with 17 points, followed by Steve Woodside and Eric Knox with 12 each. Washington was led by Detlef Schrempf with 17 points.

Knox, a freshman guard who was averaging less than five points per game, hit six of eight shots, mostly from the perimeter.

“We knew beforehand that Eric was going to be open,” Miller said, figuring the Washington defense would concentrate on Green and Steve Woodside. “Knox got time and was thoroughly relaxed and confident.”

Arizona 61, Arizona State 60--Eddie Smith converted a three-point play with four seconds left for the Wildcats who overcame a 56-47 deficit with 1:23 to play at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State freshman Chris Sandle missed a 22-footer at the buzzer.

Pete Williams scored 22 points, 19 in the second half, and Smith had 21 points and 13 rebounds for Arizona (10-4, 1-0).

It was Smith who hit a basket at the buzzer last year at Tempe to give Arizona a 65-64 win.

Steve Beck had 19 points for Arizona State (5-6, 0-1).

Washington State 71, Stanford 59--Joe Wallace scored 28 points and sparked a second half comeback by the Cougars at Pullman, Wash.

With WSU trailing 55-50, Wallace hit two quick jumpers to narrow the margin to one point and begin a 21-4 surge over the final 9:20 of the game.

Washington State, last in the Pac-10 last season, is 10-2 and 2-0.
