Vietnam, bowing to military threats from Thailand, today withdrew from part of the main Cambodian rebel base at Ampil where bands of defiant guerrillas used hit-and-run tactics against the remaining Vietnamese forces.

In a surprise ultimatum, Thailand declared sections of the Ampil base Thai soil and gave Vietnamese troops two hours to leave before Thai soldiers would force them out. When the deadline passed, Thai spotter planes reported that the Vietnamese had withdrawn from much of the disputed territory.
