Toll in Europe Chill Nears 100

PARIS —
The death toll from Western Europe’s worst cold snap in years neared 100 today and authorities reported chaos in ground and air transport throughout the Continent.
Heavy snow and rainfall over the past week have paralyzed rail, road and canal traffic throughout Europe and disrupted air transport, with airports shutting down as far south as Rome.
